in this country. now it's up to all of us to make sure changes come to pass. the community of newtown connecticut is still deeply mourning the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. the president struck an almost impossible balance of heartfelt emotion and out ragrage. the weight of the moment. no american can relive the horror of this. >> we can't tolerate this anymore. these tragedies must end. and to end them, we must change. we will be told that the causes of such violence are complex and that is true. no single law, no set of laws can eliminate evil from the world or prevent every senseless act of violence in our society. but that can't be an excuse for an action. surely we can do better than this. >> this is a moment in history where an event alters the direction of a country and moves lawmakers to unity. dianne feinstein was the first to announce an update on an assault weapons ban which she introduced in congress and will introduce it early next year. >> i intend to introduce a bill. and i intend one way or another, no matter how long it takes, to get that bill through. there's one thin

than we had in making a grim history this year? >> chris, in great contrast, the newtown massacre, where our hearts poured out watching those babies who will never have santa claus, never have easter. but i think newtown illuminated the darkness in chicago, here it's illegal to sell guns. they manufacture guns in the suburbs. they manufacture guns in rock island. so guns from the suburbs, drugs in mexico, and jobs out. that combination of jobs out and guns and drugs in means there's kind of a low intensity warfare taking place here. that's why i'm hoping at some point in time, we'll have the light on chicago that we have on newtown, so we can figure out the far more complex situation, dr. dyson. >> david culver, a georgetown law professor said, we've tolerated this intolerable situation because black and latino young men are largely the victims of that violence. and as you've indicated, it's a low intensity warfare that has been part of the landscape versus what happened in newtown. both of them are egregious, but why does one get accepted as the price of doing business in america

to pass common sense safety laws in the wake of the newtown shooting massacre. the president knows this is going to be a heavy lift. >> that's why i've asked the vice president to lead an effort that includes members of my cabinet and outside organizations to come up with a set of concrete proposals no later than january, proposals that i then intend to push without delay. this is not some washington commission. this is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside. >> one of the reasons the president is asking for action without delay is because he knows change can be accomplished, and it's been done before. the assault weapons ban signed by president clinton reduced crime lower than it had been in a generation. it's been 18 years since the crime bill was signed, and eight years since it was allowed to expire. perhaps 24 is why president obama is turning to the bill's architect for guidance. >> i want to single out for special recognition the chairman of the senate judiciary committee who ha

't act. >>> welcome back, in the wake of >>> welcome back, in the wake of the newtown school shooting, another tragic incident began bringing the gun control debate front and center. william spangler lit his home on fire in a plot to murder first responders. when the volunteer fire department arrived spangler shot at firefighters from a ditch. he killed two firefighters and wounded two others before killing himself. his sister was believed to be found dead in the home. police believe he used a bushmaster .223 caliber rifle. the same gun used in the newtown shooting. >> people go out in the middle of the night to put out fires and don't expect to be shot and killed. >> you're telling me it's not a matter of common sense if you don't have the ability to shoot off 30 rounds without reloading that just possibly you could reduce the loss of life. adam lanza would not have been able to kill as many people as he did -- >> i don't buy your argument for a minute. >> not a single republican lawmaker has come out in favor of an assault weapons ban. even gop strategist frank luntz thinks the nra

of gun sales in the wake of newtown? >> i've seen huge uptick in business. our a.r.s have been sold out because people are very concerned about them becoming banned. >> los angeles mayor antonio villaraigosa joins me live. >>> plus the louie gohmert plan to arm teachers is going forward in ohio and utah. >> i wish to god she had had an m-4 in her office. >> michelle obama gets definitive on a future run for office. and tonight, i will deliver my verdict on spike lee versus "django unchained." >> what's your name? >> django. >>> with little more than four days until the fiscal cliff, we now know that all the relevant parties will be in washington in three days. that's right. three days from now. on sunday evening before the redskins beat the cowboys. the house will finally reconvene. why? is it to finally strike a deal? honestly, no one knows. but one thing is certain. house speaker john boehner and his fellow republicans could no longer weather the incredibly bad optics of sitting at home while the president of the united states and the senate were in washington. president obama arrived

schools, an attempt to blame everything but guns for the shooting in newtown, connecticut. sheri wilson tweets "the nra sickens me. everybody is responsible but them. the nra needs to face the truth." okey moronu says " no matter what the entertainment media did, the nra provided the tools for the perpetrators to execute their plans. get rid of the guns. and the nra has blood on their hands, and anybody associated with them will suffer politically. keep sharing your thoughts with us on our facebook page and twitter using the #edshow. >>> still to come, the fiscal cliff stalemate could cost john boehner his job as house speaker. but let me tell you, there are millions of unemployed americans out there. it could cost them their benefits and a lot of pain. that's ahead. stay with us. >>> welcome back to "the ed show." nobody likes a scrooge, and i've got the numbers to prove it. darden restaurants, ever heard of them -- the umbrella corporation behind chains olive garden and red lobster, well, they did their best to avoid providing their workers with health care. now they're paying the pri
